The dream of every AI researcher is to develop algorithms that will make machines better than humans.
The recent victory of the AlphaGo AI computer has proved that this is not a far-fetched dream. As a quick reminder, Google’s AlphaGo AI machine smashed the world’s best Go players at the “Future of Go summit” held in China at the end of May 2017.
Interestingly enough, experts had predicted that AI would be better than humans at Go by 2027. Actually Google’s DeepMind research group took only two years to develop AI algorithms capable of beating the best Go players in the world.
Here’s when AI will beat humans and in which fields
According to a survey conducted by scholars from Oxford and Yale Universities, experts suggest that AI will outperform humans in translating languages by 2024, and in writing essays by 2026.
Experts are also convinced that in 10 years’ time, AI machines will be driving trucks on the roads, completely replacing human drivers.
By 2031, we should expect AI machines to invade the retail industry and replace sales assistants. AI computers will be able to write bestselling books by 2049. It will definitely be interesting to read the literary creation of a machine!
Should you need surgery after 2053, most likely a machine will play the role of the surgeon by then.
Overall, the researchers who responded to the survey believe that there is a 50% chance of AI outperforming humans in all tasks in 50 years’ time. They also believe that machines will automate human jobs by 2137.
Interestingly enough, Asian AI researchers expect these events to happen much sooner than North American researchers. Could their optimism be explained by cultural differences or is there’s more to it?
