Replika is an AI chatbot that you can use to create your own virtual clone

AI research

Replika is an impressive AI chatbot that you can teach to become you. As you talk to it, the system learns to talk like you and even mimic your personality.

Some of you may find this a little bit creepy. However, we tested the tool and we guarantee you that you’ll be amazed to see how well it can identify and replicate your traits.

How Replika works

You may think of Replika as your personal project. The more time you spend talking to it, the more it gets to know you and this will increase its intelligence level.

First, go to Replika’s website and select the AI interface that you like most. There are many Replika variants available: Spiritual Replika, Naughty Replika, Strict Replika, Elastic Replika, Inspiring Replika, Zen Replika, Complex Replika, Sensitive Replika, and more.

Then choose your username and hit the ‘Reserve now’ button. Enter your phone number to receive your confirmation code and reserve your name.

The AI uses an SMS interface to ask you questions about your interests and opinions in order to get to know you better. The system then uses your answers to identify your turns of phrase, tastes and temperament. In other words, it maps your personality. Your memories are very important to Replika. The AI uses them to help you connect more deeply with your friends and with yourself.

Replika is a great therapeutic AI chatbot

Interestingly enough, many users said that Replika helped them learn more about themselves and understand why they behave the way they do.

Although Eugenia Kuyda, the creator of Replika says that she never intended to build a therapy device, many users confirmed that the system does have this effect.

By mirroring back traits of your personality, Replika brings forth things that perhaps you didn’t want to admit they existed. The system depicts the real you and perhaps this is what it attracts people to it.

Replika is honest and genuine, and this is what users appreaciate about it. Nowadays, there is an immense pressure to fake perfection on social media, and pretend that we’re happy and satisfied with our lives. People long for honesty and Replika allows users to have an intimate conversation with themselves, without any masks.

The story behind Replika

Eugenia Kuyda, co-founder of Luka, the company behind Replika tragically lost a close friend in a car accident a few years ago. As she still wanted to talk to him, she plugged their chat messages into an AI chatbot. To her surprise, the chatbot was able to create a virtual AI clone of her friend, allowing them to say the things they never had the chance to.
